Nyonya Passions

Growing up in Nyonya family, nothing excites me more than waking up in the morning, in the kitchen, seeing a hive of activity. Relatives grinding curry paste and pounding sambal belachan, the rhythm of pestle and mortar, the chatter and laughter between the relatives (mother and aunts), chopping (sound) of vegetables, stirring the wok with a ladle, grinding rice flour in the granite millstone, watching pure white liquid of rice flowing down the canals of the grindstone and dripping into the basin. The scraping (sound) of coconut and watching snow white coconut fall on the plate. It is almost like attending a live Chinese orchestra.
